
WALT WHITMAN HIGH SCHOOL
1ST Annual Writing Contest
We invite Walt Whitman High School students in grades 9-12 to submit original short stories, poems, and personal essays to their English teachers or Mrs. Glass in Room 298 by Friday, March 6th.
GUIDELINES:

Each submission should:
-
be typed and double-spaced
-
use 10-point or 12-point Times New Roman or similar font
-
have one-inch margins
-
be printed on both sides of paper (use two columns if possible for your poem to save space)
-
be numbered on all pagesbe paper clipped, not stapled
-
include a title on the first page (no cover page)
-
not have your name on the work itself
-
be attached to a completed entry form - your name appears on this form only

​​Entries may not be e-mailed but must be turned in directly to Mrs. Glass in Room 298 on or before the deadline of Friday, March 6th.

You may enter submissions in more than one category, but only one submission per category.
(All work submitted should meet guidelines for student publications in Montgomery County Public Schools.)
REVIEW PROCESS:
A committee of Whitman staff and students will judge all entries anonymously in preliminary judging at the school level. Writers from The Writer’s Center, a non-profit organization that started in 1976 and promotes the literary arts in the DC area, will judge entries selected to advance to the next level. All winners will be invited to read their work at a reception to be hosted in their honor at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda on Tuesday, April 21st at 6:00 pm.
All entries submitted for this contest will automatically be considered for The Eidolon, Whitman’s literary arts magazine.
PRIZES:
Three prizes will be awarded in each category: first place, second place, and honorable mention.

First Place: Publication in The Eidolon, and a free workshop at the Writer's Center

Second Place: Publication in The Eidolon, and a certificate
